In a recent article about things to do on Dartmoor, a Daily Telegraph journalist describes his experience of hiring with the area’’s biggest cycle hire provider. He writes of “new strategies to help us get into Dartmoor’’s mind-clearing open space. One example is Devon Cycle Hire, a new company that takes the hassle out of renting mountain bikes by offering free delivery and collection anywhere within 25 miles of its base near Okehampton. It is a brilliant facility. We picked ours up at Princetown, then followed a 15 mile circular route across the moors passing quarries, reservoirs and exhilarating terrain. With vistas and moods constantly changing like a slide show, off road cycling here is a superb way to blow away some cobwebs while exercising those boisterous boys and bathroom-hogging girls.”

Devon Cycle Hire Limited has been described as having bikes ”in tip top condition with terrific suspension, smooth gears and springy seats” by a reporter from the Daily Mirror who visited Devon’’s top cycle hire centre with her family to sample a day out on The Granite Way. She wrote the bikes represent ”good value” and went on to describe the ”gentle slopes” of the trail and how ”A steam train passed us on the Meldon-Okehampton line, the driver waving in the true style of The Railway Children”. She goes on to mention the benefit of a traffic free trail and the fantastic scenery which includes viaducts, the ruins of Okehampton Castle and Dartmoor National Park with its famous tors and wild ponies. The reporter finishes her article on things to do in Devon by commenting, ”It certainly made us think - why go through the hassle of travelling abroad when there’’s all this on your doorstep!

Bristol Boys and Girls Enjoy a Day on the Granite Way

Fifty schoolchildren from Bristol have been cycling Dartmoor’’s stunning Granite Way with premier cycle hire firm Devon Cycle Hire Limited. The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed pedalling along the purpose built trail and completed an impressive thirteen miles of traffic free cycling together with their teachers and parent helpers.

Leading the ride was Devon Cycle Hire’’s trained mountain bike leader, Peter Turner who said, “It’’s great to take the children along the Granite Way because it’’s level, easy cycling and there are no roads in sight so they can concentrate on having fun and taking in the spectacular scenery from the trail”.

The spectacular scenery includes of course the Meldon Viaduct (featured on the homepage) and fantastic views of Okehampton Castle. The children described the bikes as “brilliant” and “really cool” and were happy to don a specialised helmet which many recognised as the helmet of choice for many pro riders.

“It’’s really rewarding to see children out cycling and having fun”, said owner Karen Turner, “they were a great group and as they are already booked in again for next year we really look forward to seeing them then and having another fantastic day out on the trail”.

Bike Sale Rounds Off Year of Success for Devon Cycle Hire

Devon Cycle Hire held its first end of season bike sale this weekend (November 12th to 13th) to make way for new hire stock in 2006. West Devon Crime Prevention Team were present for the two day event handing out free cycle coding packs, which make the bikes easier to track in the event of being stolen.
This marks the end of a busy and rewarding season for the new local firm who specialise in providing top quality bikes for hire on Dartmoor’’s stunning Granite Way cycle trail.

We have appeared again in the papers, it’s becoming quite a habit. Here are the two stories and the photos. The first photo, on the left, was used in the Okehampton Times, the second as in the Tavistock Times.
Okehampton Times
At the prestigious Okehampton Show West Devon crime prevention team and Neighbourhood Watch shared a stand with Devon Cycle Hire Limited, who donated two new mountain bikes to the police. The top specification mountain bikes will be fully marked and used by Okehampton police on the beat.
Tavistock Times
Twelve year old Joshua Bullock was the lucky winner of two new mountain bikes awarded by Karen and Peter Turner of Devon Cycle Hire. Joshua entered a competition run by the local firm in the Tavistock Times.
